Content, Links and SERPs: Simple Strategies for Increasing Organic Traffic to Your Website

No one ever said they needed less traffic coming through their webpage. In fact, you may feel as though you’re a little disappointed in the numbers. Perhaps your blog posts haven’t gone viral, or you’re not sure why you’re not getting as many visitors as your competitors. While gaining some traction in organic traffic is a major beast to take on, there are some small steps you can take toward increasing your reach. Here goes:

SERP Optimization

So, a short story on SERP, this term refers to the results presented anytime you type something into Google or any other search engine. The SERP changes slightly depending on the keywords searchers enter, or the order they enter them.  To ensure your site is closer to the top of the pile, you can tweak your SERP snippet – which includes page title, URL, and your meta description.

The title of your webpage should be limited to 50-60 characters, so the full title will display in search results. Make sure it includes your primary target keyword, and that the page content optimizes for that keyword, too.

In terms of your meta tags (description in each page’s HTML coding), keep these within a 120-150-character range and include your main target keywords. This helps search engines to display relevant results to users, who in turn, will have an easier time finding your site.

Delete Weak Content

Give your website a quick audit. Should you find some of your content is weak, or doesn’t really serve a purpose, get rid of it. Or better yet, re-write it using targeted keywords when applicable.  Additionally, if content is old or tired, give it a facelift and bring things up-to-date.

When in Doubt, Go Long

According to a recent study by BuzzSumo and Moz, while most content posted doesn’t receive many shares or likes (sad, but the truth hurts sometimes), people were more likely to engage when the content was over 1,000. While the common wisdom as of late has been to keep things short and sweet, too much sugar and snack-able marketing tidbits may leave readers craving a bit more meat.

Keep Content Fresh

Good content that is frequently updated is another way to build authority through search engine rankings. The more content you post (assuming it’s good, of course) the more pages Google can log keep in its backlog, adding to your overall authority over time.

Link Optimization

Work on getting backlinks where they count. If a relevant page links back to you, this can be a great way to build organic traffic. However, just because another website is willing to help you out, doesn’t mean it’s always a good move. Too many irrelevant links may cause Google to drop your search rankings.

It can be challenging to keep up with the sheer amount of tasks you should be considering when optimizing your website. But, with practice, little things like monitoring your content and how it’s performing, as well as keeping content and product pages up-to-date will become second nature, and over time, boost organic traffic.
